History of ABBY LANE FARM

history01
Abby Lane Farm is 56 acres of rich farmland situated on Mays Road in Duncan BC, in the heart of the Cowichan Valley. The land was first purchased in May of 1963 by Alan and Gwyn Young.

In September of 1969, the couple moved to the Valley farm with their four sons, from their Oldfield Road farm in Central Saanich where they grew strawberries. The Young family moved into the new farm house in 1970 and the following year their daughter Catharine was born.
history02
The sons helped their dad clear the raw acreage over the next few years. The farm name was registered in 1982: Catharine named it after the family dog named "Abby" and a favorite Beatle’s song "Penny Lane". Over the years, the farm has primarily been used for growing hay and raising beef cattle. There was always a huge veggie garden in the lowland peat soil and sample crops of peas, wheat and barley were tried over the years.

In 2007 Catharine and her two sons successfully grew a sample acre of pumpkins in the peat soil.

And this is where our pumpkin story begins….
